Honouring Mark 'Jarvy' Jarvis
A 555 Mile Bike Ride Across the Country for Help for Heroes and Macmillan
Jarvy was a true hockey legend. His commitment to the sport he loved was absolute, not only on the pitch as a player and umpire, but as an umpire coach and mentor. He supported the NUPA by organising umpire coaching and assessments, and supported England Hockey by volunteering to work internationally to improve umpiring in countries that were developing hockey. He was also part of the 2012 Olympics Legacy programme.
But Jarvy was also so much more. He was a good friend to so many people and a loving husband and father. He would willingly help anyone, and that generosity was further evidenced after his death by his family knowing with certainty that, should he ever be in a position to be so, he should be an organ donor and help save other lives.
Jarvy would have been humbled, yet inordinately grateful, that people have chosen to undertake this mammoth cycling challenge in his name.
The two charities being supported were both dear to Jarvy’s heart.
Jarvy was proud to be a committee member of Stoney & Friends, who to date have raised over £683k for MacMillan Cancer.
Jarvy was also part of the Hockey 4 Heroes organisation, that supports ex-military personnel as part of Help4Heroes. As this charity combined two of Jarvy’s greatest loves – hockey and his time in the RAF – he was always keen to show his support.
Those of you that were lucky enough to know Jarvy, whether briefly, as long-term friends or anything in between, will know how he enriched the lives of those who knew him, and just how much he left behind. And we hope that those of you who didn’t have the honour of meeting him will get a sense of what an awesome man he was.
Please give your support to the special group of people who are riding in Jarvy’s memory. It will be an emotional week – but worth every blister, sore muscle and bruised bum to reach their goal.
